Effect of R-123 condensate inundation and vapor shear on enhanced tube geometries Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The combined effects of refrigerant R-123 condensate inundation and vapor shear on the shell-side heat transfer coefficient were investigated for four enhanced tube geometries. The heat transfer performance of Tu-Cii geometry is nearly double that of G-SC at the lowest inundation rates and vapor velocity and more than triple that of the 26-fpi geometry, while at the highest inundation rates, it was about 10% higher than that of the other geometries. Decreases of approximately 20%, 20%, 45% and 80% were seen for the 26-fpi, 40-fpi, G-SC and Tu-Cii tubes, respectively, as inundation rate changed from the lowest to the highest. The effect of inundation was also found to dominate over the effect of vapor shear for all geometries.
