abstract
Copyright 2003 IFAC In this paper, we revisit the factors that limit the achievable performance of rudder-based roll stabilizers for ships. We quantify the best performance in terms of roll reduction, and roll reduction vs. heading interference for a given sea state and sailing condition. We do this in the context of limiting optimal control incorporating input constraints. The performance indices obtained provide a benchmark against which other control strategies can be compared, and also provide a criterion to assess applicability of the this type of stabilizer to a particular ship.
