The socioeconomic issues of Japanese beef imports Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The Japanese beef import quota will be a crucial component of USJapanese discussions in the upcoming round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations. The focus will be on the economic issues, including the effects of policy alternatives to the quota on the Japanese cattle industry and beef imports. Several social issues, including the effects of increased imports on nutrient balance in the diet, changing tastes in Japan, and their selfsufficiency goals are at least as important to the Japanese, This article considers both the economic and social issues of increased imports and their implications for negotiations.
