LeaderMember Exchange and Newcomer Adjustment Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • Newcomer adjustment is the dynamic process through which new employees adapt to their new work environment and transition from organizational outsiders to insiders. Leadermember exchange (LMX) development is an important part of newcomer adjustment. This chapter aims to systematically examine the role of LMX in newcomer adjustment. In doing so, the authors hope to inspire new studies on this topic. They review and discuss previous research on (a) the antecedents of newcomersupervisor LMX, (d) how LMX relates to newcomer adjustment outcomes, and (c) the role of LMX in expatriates and new manager adjustment. Their reviews on these three research areas summarize key theoretical arguments advanced by researchers and existing findings reported in empirical studies. Based on their qualitative review, they point out limitations in existing research on LMX and newcomer adjustment and suggest several future research directions.
