abstract

  • 126 sedentary women (4412 yr, 44.85% body fat, 35.46 kg/m2) were randomized to participate in a control group (C) or the Curves Complete 90day Challenge (CC), Weight Watchers Points Plus (WW), Jenny Craig (JC), or Nutrisystem Advance Select (NS) weight loss programs for 12wks. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and are presented as changes from baseline after 12wks. Participants in diet groups had greater changes in waist (C 2.16.6; CC 3.85.5; WW 4.05.7; JC 3.73.3; NS 2.96.3 %, p=0.008) and hip 2.96.3 %, p=0.008) and hip circumference (C 0.83.2; CC 2.96.3 %, p=0.008) and hip 4.94.6; WW 2.72.8; JC 5.14.4; NS 4.14.0 %, p=0.001) with no differences among diet groups. Resting HR, SBP, and DBP decreased over time with no differences observed among groups. Changes in relative peak VO2 (C 2.210; CC 15.417; WW 7.419; JC 8.111; NS 3.87 %, p=0.001) and 1 RM bench press (C 1.114; CC 9.313; WW 4.715; JC 5.414; NS 3.715 %, p=0.01) were greater in the CC group while changes in 1RM leg press (C 13.724; CC 16.122; WW 3.620; JC 0.523; NS 3.724 %, p=0.07) and leg press endurance (C 8.436; CC 47.3120; WW 4.545; JC 6.056; NS 1.846 %, p=0.07) tended to be greater in the CC group. Results indicate that participation in the CC program promotes more favorable changes in markers of fitness than other popular weight loss programs. Supported by Curves International, Waco, TX
