abstract
The limits in temperature and speed of a magnetic bearing operating in an engine environment was determined using a 1000 F magnetic bearing test rig. The rig consists of a shaft supported on two grease packed ball bearings with the magnetic bearing between them. The rig was used to measure the bearing coefficients and to perform rotordynamic tests. The first bearing tested is a high temperature modification of the homopolar design previously tested at cryogenic and room temperatures. The second bearing is a heteropolar design. The tests concentrated on various wire insulations and re-enforced the laminations to reach higher speeds.
