This study extends previous works on applied impact damping by applying impact dampers to MDOF structures modeled with general 3-D 'beam' finite elements. Modal based models of the MDOF systems and efficient impact damper tracking algorithms are also developed. An impact damper design for the MDOF casing structure of the SSME HPOTP is obtained. The developed modal based methods are also used to model the previous work with an experimental rotor bearing system (RBS) and impact damper. Finally, the RBS and HPOTP are modeled and simulated as unstable systems with attached impact dampers. In general, the simulations of the models obtained in this study are accomplished with excellent efficiency, and accurate results.
