abstract
Unique problems arise which only occur due to the interaction between various machines and structures. This article presents an approach to aid the plant engineer with problems of these types. The approach combines test and simulation, each complementing the other, to produce an effective, economical solution. The tools of testing include the familiar array of data loggers, analyzers and transducers. The tools of simulation are the powerful finite element programs and the powerful analog simulators. Guidelines and examples are given on how and when to combine finite element analysis and field testing to solve difficult maintenance problems.
