abstract
Fault Tolerant Homopolar Magnetic Bearings (FTHMB) have been developed to obtain high spin speeds with high reliability in flywheel batteries. The manuscript demonstrates the improvement in reliability and performance yielded by magnetic bearings with both actuation and sensing fault tolerance. The number of poles and sensors is varied in seeking optimum designs that continue performing even with large amounts of shaft runout and pole failures. Fault tolerance effectiveness is demonstrated via a computer simulation model. Copyright 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.
