abstract
Engineers may well be curious as to the influence of the impeller-diffuser forces on the rotordynamic characteristics of an actual piece of turbomachinery. As a partial answer to this point, some calculated results are presented for the HPOTP (High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump) of the SSME Space Shuttle Main Engine. The sample calculations presented herein support the following conclusions: (a) Impeller-diffuser forces have a very significant impact on the calculated rotordynamic characteristics of pumps, particularly with respect to damping and stability (b) The complete model for the impeller, specifically including the mass terms, must be included in rotordynamic calculations to achieve reasonable results.
