Using Data and Design to Bring the New Variorum Shakespeare Online Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • This chapter tells the story of the challenge of translating the 500+ page codices, idiosyncratic textual shorthand, extensive appendices, and other print features of the New Variorum Shakespeare (all encoded in TEI) into a dynamic and accessible website. Two new digital tools were created to do so, each demonstrating the unique affordances of a networked environment and the inseparability of data structures and design: Corpora on the back end, and the Variorum Reader on the front end. The interdisciplinary, collaborative design and development process required sensitivity to the achievement of the printed variorum edition as an interface for research into Shakespeares work, and it revealed how this kind of remediation is more akin to interpretation than translation.
