An overview of Sustainable Development Goal 13 Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) seeks to address the urgency of climate action to mitigate the causes of climate change. Global climate action is needed to make significant and meaningful strides toward this Goal across all industries and individuals. Sport can promote more sustainable efforts, but greater focus is required to engage all sport actors (including governing bodies, leagues, teams/clubs, participants/athletes, fans/spectators). To address Goal 13, the sport sector must first understand its climate vulnerabilities and contributions to climate change by identifying its climate risks and environmental impacts (i.e., greenhouse gases). This chapter provides an overview of how Goal 13 relates to the sport sector and how the industry can respond to the call for urgent climate action by fulfilling the prescribed targets.
