In principle, theres no absolute need for science and technology journalists. Scientists can, after all, communicate directly with the public. Indeed, some do and do so quite effectively. Others try and fail spectacularly. There is much you can learn about your own role in science communication from the most and least effective scientists who engage the public directly.
