One Brain is Never Enough: Personal Knowledge Management for Academics Open Teaching Materials uri icon

abstract

  • Thanks to Google and academic databases, finding the information we need for research has never been easier. Sometimes, in fact, it's almost too easy. With the right keywords on the right database, a 15-minute literature search can return dozens, if not hundreds, of potentially useful references, all of which we can download to our devices almost instantly. This is remarkable and powerful, but it has a dark side. Namely, what do you do with all of that information once you have it? How do you keep track of it all? How do you identify what's important? And, perhaps most importantly, how do you remember what you need when you need it? In this learning module, we will discuss common challenges of personal knowledge management, general strategies for usefully organizing information, and specific technologies that can make keeping track of information easier.
