What Contributes to Job Search Self-Regulation? Understanding Individual and Contextual Factors Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Job search is a dynamic, self-regulated process through which job seekers work to obtain the goal of full-time employment. Specifically, job search behaviors are exerted when discrepancies exist between individuals' current situation (e.g., unemployed, underemployed, graduating, etc.) and their desired employment state. Although scholars have increasingly begun to theorize and conceptualize the job search in this manner (i.e., dynamics surrounding self-regulation), little is still known about what influences one's job search success (i.e., effective self- regulation during the job search). In light of this theoretical gap, the current symposium aims to advance this self-regulatory perspective by considering how both individual differences (e.g., regulatory focus, goal orientation, self-efficacy) and contextual factors related to the job search (e.g., feedback, unemployment insurance) help or hinder job search self-regulation. In doing so, we provide critical insight into the next wave of research tied to job search self-regulation."
