Experimental anesthetization of a dromedary camel. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Sedation was given to an adult male dromedary camel to facilitate loading and transport and also to serve as an anesthetic premedication for a subsequent period of general anesthesia, lasting more than 8 hr, and followed by euthanasia. The techniques used and the results are described in detail. Rompun (Bay Va 1470 Xylazine), given in incremental doses, proved very satisfactory and there were no undesirable side effects. Various parameters were recorded during anesthesia, including the EEG and an epidural electrocorticogram. The first phase of anesthesia was carried out with a nitrous oxide oxygen gas mixture and intravenous injection of guaiacol glycerol ether and thiopental sodium. A second phase followed in which halothane added to the nitrous oxide oxygen mixture was the anesthetic. Because of the difficulty of entering the larynx a tracheostomy tube was inserted.
