abstract

  • Automotive industries strive to attain efficient production methods coupled with reduced weight, low cost material systems to create safe and reliable components. A current area of emphasis is the redesign of bumper beams to utilize composites. One of the manufacturing techniques of choice is structural reaction injection molding, SRIM. The advantages are many fold; such as lower weight thus higher fuel efficiency, reduced number of mechanically fastened parts, and design freedom. The current study focuses on the replacement of traditional steel bumper beams with composite beams manufactured with SRIM technology. A thorough analysis of the beam responses is undertaken to evaluate the structural performance. Finite element analysis is employed to evaluate failure modes and account for orthotropy in the material system. Experimental and analytical techniques are integrated to translate the physical characteristics of the beam into its performance.
