abstract
The efficient and economical adaptation of composite of composite materials to offshore application is becoming an attractive research area. The important research issues are the aging effects in a marine environment and the load transfer between different fibers. Since limited research has been conducted in the mechanics and testing of hybrid composites, in this paper, the essential considerations for the analysis and design of structurally and economically efficient lay-ups are presented for multi-axial load bearing structures. The work focuses on analytical and experimental study of prototype tubes and implementation of an optimization technique to study the design of prototype and full scale components. The results indicate that the implementation of a progressive failure criterion in the finite element procedures accurately captures the response observed in the testing of pressurized composite tubes.
