HEAT-TRANSFER AND PRESSURE-DROP OF SPINED PIPE IN CROSS FLOW .1. PRESSURE-DROP STUDIES Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Pressure drop data were taken for air blown in cross flow over banks of spined pipe. Two pipe diameters were tested, each at different equilateral triangular spacings. The 1/4 -in. (6.35 mm) nominal diameter spined pipe was spaced 1.50 in., 1.13 in., and 0.791 in. (38.1 mm, 28.6 mm, and 20.1 mm) center-to-center, and the 1/8-in. (3.18 mm) nominal diameter spined pipe was spaced 0.897 in., 0.642 in., and 0.542 in. (22.8 mm, 16.3 mm, and 13.3 mm) center-to-center. Rows were added one at a time ranging from one to eight, and air velocities ranged from 200 to 1100 ft/min (1 to 5.6 m/s). To extend the data to gases other than air, the Fanning friction factor is presented as a function of the Reynolds number. The emphasis of this paper (Part I) is pressure drop, while a companion paper (Part II) describes heat transfer, and a third paper (Part III) compares the performance of spined pipe with other heat transfer surfaces.
