abstract
Major trends and events in the field of psychology and in society in general have underscored training inadequacies in graduate psychology programs. As a result, individual practitioners and the profession as a whole have not been prepared to respond effectively to the ethnic and cultural concerns of diverse client populations. Five imperatives for developing ethnically and culturally relevant graduate programs are proposed. Collectively, these imperatives provide a firm mandate for program relevance. Specific recommendations, including a model for cross-cultural curricula, are presented. The article concludes with practical implementation steps. 1985 American Psychological Association.
