abstract
The dynamic behavior of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is discussed. Transfer function models of the machine for various control variables are obtained. Transient responses for a step change in these variables are illustrated. The stability behavior of the machine under variable frequency operation is characterized. Instability zones at lower speed ranges are identified. Suitable compensation techniques are proposed to stabilize the drive over the entire speed range of operation. Finally, self controlled PMSM operation is discussed.
