Medium Voltage AC-AC Adapter using Multilevel Capacitor Clamped Buck Converter Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • 2016 IEEE. In this paper, a multilevel capacitor clamped buck converter is investigated for AC-AC applications. The proposed topology significantly improves the flexibility of distribution systems in applications such as data centers and residential/industrial power distribution in urban settings. This paper discusses the operation and control of the proposed topology for a load of 50 kVA and 0.9 power factor, with a requirement to step down the voltage from 8 kV to 2.4 kV. An application of the proposed converter as an interface to a solid state transformer is discussed. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate that the topology can provide a low THD output voltage. A scaled-down laboratory prototype was constructed and experimental results are shown to prove the functionality of the topology.
