Detection and control of interarea oscillations in power systems by instantaneous eigenvalue control of TCSC Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • In this work, we apply the globally available information about the system to the adaptation of thyristor controlled series capacitance (TCSC) controllers, placed at select locations in the network. Based on the linearized model of the system reduced to its dynamic variables x = Ax+Bu, where xRn is the system state, and uRm is the control vector. The control we propose attempts to optimally adjust the line admittance on sample to sample basis in order to reduce the interarea oscillations in the power systems. To that end, we track the critical set of eigenvalues and attempt to shift them jointly in order to reduce the interarea oscillations. We explain how such approach may combine the global system information with locally observable quantities and eventually result in the breakup and dampening of inter-area modes.
