Large eddy turbulent simulation of three dimensional bundle flows Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The objective of this study is to apply the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique to practical three-dimensional turbulent flows. LES is emerging as one of the most promising techniques for the calculation of turbulence within industrial flow components such as steam generators and heat exchangers. In this investigation, the unsteady two- and three-dimensional flow field within a tube bundle has been calculated and compared with available experimental findings. The results of a LES calculation are time histories of the fluctuating velocity components and pressure as each mesh location. The power spectral densities of the time dependent lift and drag coefficients are compared with similar data obtained experimentally. The results show that the LES calculations are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data for both two- and three-dimensional calculations. This study also shows that the two-dimensional model provides a satisfactory simulation of the three-dimensional turbulent phenomenon occurring within the tube bundle for the cases considered.
