abstract
It is shown that several different methods for designing high-order linear feedback control laws can be unified in the sense that a single approach can be taken to 'optimally tune' these methods vis-a-vis the placement and sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors. A generalized closed-loop eigenvalue sensitivity and constrained optimization approach is then formulated. It is shown how three different approaches to the design of linear feedback controllers lead naturally to the approach formulated here. A low-dimensioned discrete system and an order 42 model of a flexible structure-controlled via direct-output feedback are used to illustrate the approach.
