abstract
The availability of scanner data from retailers enhances analysts' ability to understand consumer demand, particularly for food products. Cotterill and others have noted that scanner data allow significant advances in understanding food marketing because one can now estimate firm-, brand-, and commodity-level demand models. At the same time, a number of econometric considerations arise from scanner data use in demand analyses. Understanding these econometric considerations is essential for estimating valid demand elasticities useful for policy analyses.
