abstract
The predicted and measured short term foundation behavior of a 28 story building in downtown San Antonio, Texas is reported. The soil is a stiff to hard clay and clay shale. The design based on laboratory tests performed on recovered samples leads to 80 ft (24. 4 m) deep 4. 5 ft (1. 37 m) diameter shafts with 13 ft (3. 97 m) diameter bells for the most heavily loaded piers. The calculated settlement is 0. 5 in. (12. 7 mm). Pressuremeter tests are performed after the fact indicating moduli 11 times higher than those given by the laboratory tests. The load distribution in the instrumented shafts and the settlement history enable one to evaluate the predictions.
