IntellBatt: Toward a Smarter Battery Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • IntellBatt, a novel multicell battery design, exploits cell characteristics to increase battery lifetime, ensure safe operation, and improve performance. IntellBatt has three main components, including a cell array, a cell switching circuit (CSC) that connects the cell array to the battery's main terminals, and an IBCA manager that manages the cells and determines their interconnection based on the required load current of the device using the battery. A SMBus interface that provides for information exchange between IntellBatt and the device is ignored here for simplicity. Because IntellBatt optimizes cell utilization based on cell states and the load current, it is necessary to obtain a current profile using a real device to evaluate the design's effectiveness. IntellBatt's novel intelligent battery cell array design offloads battery management responsibilities from the system using the battery onto the battery itself. It's design should be applicable to fuel cell technology, which is quickly emerging as the next-generation energy source.
