An Examination of Newness in Emerging Approaches to Counseling Intervention Academic Article

abstract

• In this reaction, we employ a critical lens as we evaluate three approaches to counseling intervention. In consideration of the assertion of the lead articles authors that these approaches are novel and because of our fervent belief in the importance of establishing clear operationalizations, developing cogent theory to guide practice, and eliminating obfuscation, we offer several areas for consideration. We especially emphasize the importance of distinguishing original ideas from those that may be a repackaging of time-honored constructs rooted in earlier theories. We also seek clarification of ambiguous ideas. We offer our critique with the hope that the authors of this Major Contribution will continue to develop, refine, and enhance their work, and a critical discourse will ensue.
