abstract
This paper addresses the problem of wave forces on bridge decks created by water flowing against and over the decks such as in the case of surges due to hurricanes. Such waves develop horizontal and vertical loads on the bridge decks. These decks in turn may fail by horizontal sliding since they are not tied to the piers. One solution is to tie the decks down to the piers but then the foundation has to resist the additional load. This paper takes a first look at the magnitude of such forces and at the impact they are likely to create on the foundation of the piers. Copyright 2008 ASCE.
