Encoding Serial Graphical Data for Energy-Delay Product/Energy Minimization Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • In this paper we report a novel approach to reduce the Energy-Delay Product (EDP) and energy for graphical data transmission over serial buses. For any symbol that is to be transmitted on the bus, we select the best code (from an EDP or energy minimization standpoint) from among a set of codebooks. In particular, our implementation utilizes 3 codebooks. Our approach is compared with other reported techniques in the literature, and the results are quite promising. We demonstrate that our technique achieves a 10% improvement in EDP over the best approach known for serial data transmission, with a significant improvement in encoding/decoding complexity and energy. We also show that the average number of transitions of our scheme is 10.9% above the theoretical lower bound (in contrast to the best approach known for serial transmission of LCD data, which is 37.6% above the theoretical lower bound). 2009 American Scientific Publishers.
