abstract
The physical meanings of the directional derivative of the constitutive surfaces are discussed. The signs of these parameters are reexamined by using the measured constitutive surfaces for an unsaturated expansive soil and an unsaturated collapsible soil. Based on the discussion, parameters studies are performed to numerically investigate these parameters' influence on the coupled consolidation of unsaturated soils. It is found that there is also a Mandel-Cryer effect in unsaturated expansive soils and a reverse Mandel-Cryer effect in unsaturated collapsible soils. Six parameters influencing the Mandel-Cryer effect in unsaturated soils are discussed. Copyright ASCE 2006.
