abstract
The use of precipitates of polyethylene and functionalized ethylene oligomers to entrap and recover homogeneous catalysts is discussed. Alkene oligomers containing suitable functionality for use as ligands for transition metal catalysts were prepared by anionic oligomerization of ethylene or of butadiene followed by quenching of the intermediate lithiated polymer with various electrophiles. Addition of transition metals to such ligands in hot toluene solutions led to formation of homogeneous catalysts. Ni(O) catalysts have been prepared whose activity and selectivity for butadiene cyclooligomerization compare favorably to homogeneous catalysts having low molecular weight phosphite ligands.
