Organometallic polymers include a variety of materials with diverse properties ranging from stable refractory polymers to highly reactive transition metal-containing polymeric catalysts. Alkali metal organometallic polymers, polymers containing alkali metal-carbon bonds or which incorporate alkali metal organometallic reagents, are expected to be and are reactive materials in analogy to their well known homogeneous counterparts. In this chapter, we summarize some of the chemistry leading to these useful organometallic polymers and selectively describe some of their applications. Illustrative examples from our work and the work of others are included in these discussions. Although these discussions mainly concern organometallic derivatives of organic polymers, we have also included a brief discussion of some similar chemistry of alkali metal-graphite intercalates.
