abstract
Well-dispersed epoxy/single walled carbon nanotube (epoxy/SWNT) nanocomposites were prepared by oxidization and functionalization of the SWNT surfaces using polyamidoamine generation-0 (PAMAM-O) dendrimer. Neat epoxy, epoxy/pristineSWNTs and epoxy/PAMAM-0 were also prepared for comparison purposes. The morphology and mechanical properties of the above model systems were investigated. It is found that surface functionalization can effectively improve the dispersion and adhesion of SWNTs in epoxy. However, mechanical property improvements are limited. Issues regarding optimization of mechanical properties of epoxy/SWNT nanocomposites are discussed.
