Probabilistic influence of material uncertainties on the inelastic response of SMA composites Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The study of the inelastic behavior of active composites have primarily focused on those with deterministic material properties. While these studies are useful in predicting the composite behavior, these do not take into account the possible influence of the uncertainty in material properties of the constituents. In this paper, we examine the influence of a stochastic distribution in the transformation temperatures of the SMA fibers embedded in a non-active matrix phase. Two isothermal mechanical loading modes are studied - uniaxial tension and transverse shear. It is seen that the inelastic strain on loading in both cases is virtually insensitive to the stochastic distribution whereas the stress needed to commence the transformation and the one needed to end it are quite sensitive.
