© 2011 The American Ceramic Society. Formation of tribofilm is important for anti-wear behavior. In this research, we used a new approach to reduce wear. Specifically, we applied Ti2AlC materials as additives during wear of medium carbon steel. Ti2AlC like the rest of MAX phases is nano-layered materials with low coefficient of friction, low thermal expansion, good thermal and electrical conductivities, and is resistant to chemical attack. Instead of wear, it was found that there was a Ti2AlC tribofilm formed on the steel surface protecting material loss. Detailed characterization was conducted over the film properties. In this paper, we discuss mechanisms of Ti2AlC tribofilm formation and wear that are important for tribological applications.
