abstract
In a longrange plan for ocean sciences, the National Science Foundation (NSF) recently emphasized a growing need for large research ships with global capabilities (Eos, October 1, 1985, p. 682). On a smaller scale, some research in coastal and shelf seas may benefit more from improved instruments than from grander vessels. A new generation of compact ocean instruments will encourage the use of ships of opportunity as effective alternatives to specialized ships with exotic facilities. In a curious mix, some of the new technology may be well matched with the unique capabilities of traditional sailing vessels. 1985. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved.
