abstract
This chapter reviews the current state of knowledge on the role that groundwater plays in Earth's Critical Zone (ECZ). It analyzes the capabilities and problems of existing groundwater flow and transport modeling frameworks for dealing with problems associated with ECZ. It especially discusses the coupling of groundwater process with other processes of ECZ. Overall, when groundwater is a concern, improving the understanding of integrated processes over multiple spatial and temporal scales in ECZ and finding efficient and accurate computational methodology of dealing with the resulting coupled models remain the central focus of future studies. 2015 Elsevier B.V.
