Saravanan, Ramalingam Professor

Positions

I study the mathematical and physical aspects of the climate system. I use computer models of varying degrees of complexity to analyze weather and climate phenomena. My recent research is focused on the following scientific questions:

- What is the influence of large-scale phenomena such as El Nino and the Atlantic Meridional Mode on tropical cyclone activity?

- Do swirling eddies in the ocean affect atmospheric storms in the middle latitudes?

- Can statistical and machine learning approaches be used to analyze the relationship between atmospheric state and rainfall?

My broader interests include philosophy of science, especially in the context of climate prediction, as well as the innovative use of computers for research and teaching.
