Genetic engineering of livestock to improve production of agricultural and biomedical products. Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Together and with other ongoing research projects, the laboratory's main focus is to develop new strategies and technologies to make site-specific genetic modifications to livestock genomes. These genetic changes can lead to production of animals with traits not previously associated with the species that impart an enhanced production phenotype. Furthermore, we can utilize the unique nature of the livestock mammary gland to produce unique peptides derived from zoonotic pathogens, capable of eliciting potent immune responses when used as vaccines. Overall, the incorporation of these animals into agricultural and biomedical industries will have an important impact in lowering the cost of food and medicine production.
