abstract

  • In this book, I will talk about my final project. It is a project exploring Chinatowns in the US. There is at least one Chinatown in nearly every major city in America. These Chinatowns used to be ethic enclaves for Chinese immigrants. However as the gentrification among Chinese immigrants started, lots of ethnic Chinese preferred to move out to live in the white communities. This made the Chinatowns gradually lose their ethnic characteristics and stuck in an embarrassed historical state. This project aims at figuring out where the Chinatowns are from, how they developed, and where they are going and tries to solve the problems using architectural design methods. There are many Chinatowns within the United States. The oldest Chinatown in the US is located in San Francisco, California. New York City has a significant Chinese American population, with several large Chinatowns. Other major Chinatowns include: Boston's Chinatown, Philadelphia's Chinatown, Chicago's Chinatown, Austin's Chinatown, Los Angeles' Chinatown, Seattle's Chinatown, and Honolulu's Chinatown.
