Monte Carlo Study of a Clinical PET using the GATE software Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Monte Carlo simulation is a powerful tool in research in the field of medical physics and there is a wide area of applications. The purpose of this proposal is to help students to understand the basics of the Monte Carlo simulation software Geant4 and its application (GATE) for Positron Emission Tomography (PET). First of all we will start by creating a model of a clinical PET system, and secondly we will run a number of simulations and compare the performance of the model to published data for this system according to NEMA protocol, and finally we will study how scattered radiation affects the image quality
