ETx-STEAM Network to Empower URM Middle School Students Grant uri icon

abstract

  • This project aims to stimulate the interest of middle school-aged under-represented minorities (URMs) to pursue enrollment in high school science, math, and computing courses through exploring digital world-building. For the purpose of this project URM is defined as the Black, Latinx and Native American populations with an emphasis on females within those populations. The primary focus of this project is the development and support of Near Peer Mentors (NPMs): college students who are fundamental to the success of the project. The NPMs are undergraduates and graduate students at TAMU and Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) who will take part in coursework at their respective institutions focused on developing cultural awareness, technical knowledge, and mentoring skills required to be successful as mentors to middle school students. The key innovation of our project is the use of college students as NPMs to guide the URMs through Digital World Building projects using real-time game engine tools and math concepts to explore form, motion, materials and lighting.
