abstract
A variety of clinical conditions are associated with accumulation of excess fluid in the extravascular spaces of the body tissues. To obtain greater insight into the underlying mechanisms of edema formation, a simplified mathematical model of fluid and protein exchange in the microcirculation was developed. After examining the simplified model, additional compensatory features were included to produce a more complex interactive system. The complex model was used to examine the relative contribution of each compensatory mechanism to prevention of vasogenic edema, myxedema and lymphedema.
