Application of Geostatistical Modeling in an Integrated Reservoir Simulation Study of the Lower Bahariya Reservoir, Egypt Conference Paper uri icon


  • This paper presents the application geostatistical modeling of to capture the reservoir heterogeneity in a Lower Bahariya reservoir, Western Desert, Egypt. `Conventional' geologic modeling in the highly heterogeneous Hayat Yasser field was not adequate to capture the heterogeneity and address the objectives of our study of the field. Previous studies were not successful in modeling this field due to the high level of heterogeneity. We used geostatistics to integrate well log, geologic, and core data to develop a 3D model that honors well data exactly and imposes spatial continuity relations derived from varicography. Our modeling approach consisted of generating a three-dimensional porosity distribution using ordinary kriging and generating permeability realizations using a `cloud transform' that uses the porosity distribution in conjunction with the porosity/permeability scatter plot based on core data. The cloud transform technique uses concepts from conditional probability to preserve the inherent scatter in the porosity/permeability relationship. In this paper we will present the geostatistical model selection, model validation (dynamic history matching) and model forecasting. We also present new techniques for quickly identifying the most promising areas for redevelopment in the reservoir prior to optimizing reservoir management strategies with the simulator. Our conclusions and recommendations, based on the results of this study, will help improve future management and development of similar waterfloods in the region.
