abstract
2014 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In recent years, iron/iron oxides in the form of nanoparticles have demonstrated unique properties for many advanced technological applications. In this chapter, spectroscopy techniques as a tool to characterize the ferrates(IV, V, and V) are presented. Fe Mssbauer spectroscopy, which is able to distinguish easily between various oxidation states of iron in compounds, is described in detail. The work carried out in the past decade is mostly described. Recently, Mssbauer parameters of an Fe(VI)-nitrido complex were also determined. The chapter presents case studies on decomposition of Na4FeO4 in air, decomposition of iron(V) in air, decomposition of K2FeO4 in humid air, decomposition of BaFeO4 in dry and humid air, thermal decomposition of K2FeO4 in static air, and formation of ferrates in the solid-state reaction of Fe2O3and Na2O2 are presented.
