  • The U.S. Surgeon General’s message in the 2000 report, titled Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General, was that oral health is essential for overall general health and well-being of “all Americans and can be achieved by all Americans.” However, today not all Americans are able to achieve the same desired level of oral health. Disparities in oral health status are still associated with poverty (especially poor children), ethnicity, and geographic isolation.
