abstract
We have summarized some of the findings related to the secretory and proliferative heterogeneous responses of cholangiocytes in our proposed model of Fig. 4. In this model, large (but not small) ducts contain the receptor for secretin and SSTR2 and physiologically respond to these 2 hormones with changes in ductal secretory activity. Following BDL, large (but not small) cholangiocytes selectively undergo mitosis with increases in proliferative and secretory capacity. Furthermore, after acute CCl4 treatment, large ducts are damaged by CCl4 treatment with loss of proliferative and secretory capacity whereas small ducts (resistant to CCl4-induced damage) compensate for loss of large duct function.
