Genetic defects of collagen. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Because biosynthesis of collagen requires a complex series of carefully orchestrated steps, a genetic mutation causing a small error in one of those steps can produce devastating effects. Such mutations have been identified as the primary defect in several rare heritable disorders. We may soon be able to define the genetic factors in common degenerative disorders of connective tissues.
